NEW DELHI, MARCH 10. A registered bad character, allegedly involved in at least 27 criminal cases, was gunned down in an encounter with the Special Cell of the Delhi police at Kalkaji in South Delhi today. According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Ashok Chand, a team led by Inspector Manoj Dixit received a tip-off that Hanumant, a criminal wanted in several cases, would come near Chandiwala Estate at Kalkaji today. Subsequently, the police laid a trap and around 6-30 p.m. spotted the motorcycle on which the suspect was coming. They tried to intercept the motorcycle upon which Hanumant whipped out a firearm and opened fire at the police party. The police fired in retaliation gunning down Hanumant. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The police records state that Hanumant, whose father earlier worked in the SBM Colony at Moti Nagar in West Delhi, was a desperate criminal. He was involved in cases of extortion, dacoity and attempt-to-murder. It is alleged that he had roped in over a dozen young men living in the SBM Colony area and in certain cases, the police said, he would force them to work for him.
