By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, MARCH 11 . The multilevel flyover and road widening projects proposed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in and around Chennai will reduce travel time, save fuel and lower vehicular emissions by ensuring speedier movement. Efforts will be made to minimise inconvenience to road-users during the construction, the Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T.R. Baalu, said today. Participating in the `earth-breaking' ceremonies of the multilevel flyover at the Kathipara junction and laying of a four-lane road from Maduravoyal to Madhavaram he said the emphasis would be on completion ahead of the schedule. The companies, which bagged the contracts, were urged to complete the jobs six months ahead. The schedule for the cloverleaf shaped flyover was two years and for the four-lane, 30 months. Noting that the NHAI proposed the multi-level grade separators at Kathipara, Koyambedu and Padi in view of the traffic intensity around 2.74 lakhs, 2.55 lakhs and 1.43 lakhs in terms of passenger car units he said the Chennai Bypass project was spread over two phases.
The two phases
In the first phase, the NHAI constructed a two-lane 19.7 km Chennai Bypass road connecting National Highways 4 and 45. It was opened to traffic in June 2002. This would be widened to four-lane. In the second phase, the four-lane would be laid between Maduravoyal and Madhavaram, a distance of 13 km. It would pass through the Ambattur Industrial Estate and connect NH-4, NH-5 and NH-205. Eight underpasses along with service roads would be provided for local traffic. The cost of the project was Rs. 480 crores. The NHAI proposed to establish multilevel grade separators at Koyambedu, Padi and near the Chennai airport, all of which, including the Kathipara facility, would cost Rs.200 crores and be completed in two years.
