Governor inaugurates healthcare facility

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MARCH 11. The Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, inaugurated a healthcare facility focussed on fertility, neo-natal intensive care and early detection of cancerfor womenat Ramapuram, near here, recently.

The chairperson and managing director of Srushti Hospital, S. Samundi Sankari, said the facility would also specialise in accident and trauma care, besides paediatrics, surgery and laparoscopy.

Mr. Barnala said every time a woman in the third world became pregnant, the risk of her dying was 200 times higher than that of those in the developed world.

Even after birth, girls were less cared for compared to boys and by the age of five years, the female mortality exceeded that of boys by 20 per cent in many States, including Tamil Nadu.

Infertility represented a major health and social problem. "Many women are abandoned by their husbands, especially in rural areas, due to their inability to bear children. This has major psychological and sociological implications both on the mother as well as on the society," he said.
