Notice to ASI

NEW DELHI, MARCH 11. The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Director-General, C. Babu Rajeev, its Superintending Archaeologist, Delhi Circle, A.K. Sinha, and Delhi's Police Commissioner on a public interest litigation accusing certain ASI officials of indulging in corrupt practices in the name of conservation of monuments in the Capital.

The petitioner, Bhaichara Samiti, a non-governmental organisation, through its counsel, Rakesh Tiku, alleged that certain officials of the ASI had pocketed the proceeds earned through the sale of the logs of 200 trees which the ASI had recently felled around the historic Red Fort.

He submitted that he reported the matter to the city police, but they did not take any action. Therefore, the voluntary organisation had moved the High Court seeking a direction for investigation into the allegations.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice B.C. Patel and Justice S.K. Kaul issued the notices to the three asking them to file replies by April 7.

The Bench appointed Ajay Tandon a Local Commissioner and asked him to visit the sites of important monuments like the Red Fort, Qutub Minar.
