Nellore downs Vizag

VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 12. Last year's super league winner Visakhapatnam took an early lead but went down to Nellore 2-1 in the semifinals of the 21st Andhra State senior men's hockey championship at MBP Corporation ground, Vijayawada on Saturday.

K.V. Anjaneya Rao scored for Visakhapatnam in the fifth minute of the game but N. Sai Raj Singh put Nellore on par 10 minutes later. B. Deepak Akash Babu converted a penalty corner just before the breather for Nellore.

Nellore will meet the winner of the semifinal between last year's third placed team, Guntur, and East Godavari. The match between the team was stopped in the 59th minute due to bad light and will be resumed on Sunday morning. No team has scored a goal yet.

Earlier Visakhapatnam defeated Anantapur 3-0. G.V.S. Prasad Kumar converted a penalty corner in the 28th minute, followed by a penalty corner conversion by Sk. Kasim in the 54th minute and a field goal by S. Abdul Rehman in the 62nd minute.

East Godavari moved up with a 4-1 win over Vizianagaram. M.A. Sekhar Babu converted a penalty corner as early as in the third minute, followed by N. Sudhakar's goal in the 13th minute. After M. Bharat Kumar scored for Vizianagaram off a penalty corner in the 59th minute, P. Durga Prasad increased the lead for East Godavari through a penalty corner conversion and two minutes later K. Srinivasa Rao rounded off the rally through a field goal.
