NAGERCOIL, MARCH 12. Steps would be taken to change the medical education syllabus in the State after obtaining permission from the Indian Medical Council, the Health Minister, N. Thalavai Sundaram said. He was presiding over a meeting organised by the Indian Overseas Bank to distribute personal computers and television sets to the students of Asaripallam Government medical college here on Saturday. The Minister said that as there was a demand for a change in the syllabus, the State Government had sought permission from the Indian Medical Council. The State Government found it necessary to make changes in the syllabus so that the students could compete with those from other countries. As directed by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, steps would be taken to appoint 2,322 doctors on a contract basis to fill the vacancies in medical colleges and Government hospitals. At present, the State had 12 medical colleges. The letter of intent to open two more colleges in Theni and Vellore had been issued to the State Government. The total strength in the 12 medical colleges was 1,445. There were eight more medical colleges run privately, he said.
