Unseasonal rain helps in meeting drinking water needs of Adilabad

By Our Correspondent

ADILABAD, MARCH 12. The unseasonal yet copious rainfall in January-end has apparently helped mitigate the drinking water problem in most parts of Adilabad district. Against a normal rainfall of 17 mm for January and February, almost 107 mm was recorded which has raised the ground water levels to some extent.

It has also helped in filling up rural ponds and minor water bodies which take care of the drinking water needs of cattle. But despite this gladdening aspect, the Rural Water Supply (RWS) department suffers from shortage of engineering staff. There are 25 vacancies of Junior Engineers in the RWS department at present.

Contingency plan

Though the situation is not `alarming' the RWS has drawn a contingency plan for Rs. 11.45-crore works related to digging up of new bore wells, restoration of defunct schemes and extension of existing pipelines. Of the total of 1,858 works worth Rs. 7.5 crores sanctioned so far, 1,386 have been completed. A sum of Rs. 4.8 crores has been released for these works.

"Not taking any chances as we have a long way to go so far as Summer is concerned, an urgent grant of Rs. 1.5 crores has been sought from the Relief department. This will take care of works in some remote hilly areas which have traditionally faced drinking water problems," the RWS Superintending Engineering Ramkishan told The Hindu . As per the Ground Water department there are no category I stress mandals in the district. Category I means the ground water levels are below 20 mts.
