Taking Tirukkural to common man urged

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, MARCH 12. The second conference of the World Thirukkural Forum was inaugurated here today. Tamil scholars and poets from all over the country are attending the two-day conference, which features seminars, discussions and poetry recital.

Delivering his inaugural address, the president of the forum, Sri Ponnambala Desigar of Kunrakudi Mutt, said the idea behind the conference was not to discuss the Tamil classic among scholars and leave it behind but to find out ways and means to take the doctrine of Tirukkural to the common man.

He said the conference would be a platform to formulate the path in which the dogma of Tirukkural should traverse in order to transform the living pattern of individuals.

Tiruvalluvar's work, he said, was applicable to all, irrespective of socio-economic status, since it possessed an outstanding quality unmatched by any other literary work in the world. The forum, with branches all over the world, was striving to earn due recognition to the Tamil classic, he said.

Earlier, Sri Balamurugan Adimai unveiled a portrait of Tiruvalluvar. V. Irai Anbu, Commissioner, Disciplinary Proceedings, Thamizhannal and N. Manimozhian, general secretary of the forum, spoke.

In his address, Abdul Rahman, popular poet, said, "Tirukkural appeals to all five senses and is like a supermarket. One need not read many books to know different things since this one itself provides the entire knowledge that could be derived from several books." He was worried that Tamils had failed to accord due recognition to works of Tiruvalluvar.

The inaugural function was followed by a seminar, and a youth workshop in the afternoon session.

The general body meeting of the forum is scheduled for tomorrow.
