Good Samaritan award for Vivek Oberoi

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MARCH 13. Actor Vivek Oberoi was honoured here on Saturday by the Rotary International with a `Good Samaritan Award' for his humanitarian support and help rendered to people in tsunami affected Devanampattinam village in Cuddalore.

Mr. Oberoi received the award from the Rotary International district governor, Benjamin Cherian, during the district conference `Utsav-2005' here.

The non-government organisation, The Banyan, was given an award for its work to rehabilitate mentally challenged women.

Accepting the award, Mr. Oberoi said: "The biggest challenge we faced was to ensure that no epidemic broke out."

He recalled the case of a father who was unable to get relief though he lost all the money he had saved for his son's heart surgery. Mr. Oberoi later helped the boy to undergo surgery.

He said the image of a forlorn old woman affected by the tsunami prompted him to start `Project Hope'.

Mr. Cherian and A.S. Venkatesh, chairman, District Conference, spoke. Earlier, the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, E.V.K.S. Ilangovan inaugurated `Utsav-2005'.
