NELLORE, MARCH 13. It was a festive day for the inhabitants of Krishnapuram village of Indukurpet mandal, on Sunday, as the local fishermen went into the sea for the first time after the tsunami disaster hit the coast on December 26. In the resultant tragedy, four persons died, while 82 mechanical boats were partially damaged so were the fishing nets. One boat was also washed away. All this resulted in misery for those living in this fishermen-dominated village. The Government and the administration responded promptly to the situation and immediately sanctioned ex gratia to the victims besides providing relief and rehabilitation in the form of rice, nets and repairing the damaged boats. Voluntary organisations too contributed their mite in providing succour to the affected fishermen. Despite all this help, a sense of uncertainty and frustration prevailed among the fishermen. Some of the fishermen were not sure of getting into the sea again and had reconciled to their fate. But today was different as 79 fibre boats entered the sea with a large number of womenfolk greeting the fishermen. The entire area wore a festive look even as devotional songs and music reverberated in the entire village. The fishermen said they were again venturing into the sea, mainly due to the assistance extended by Government and voluntary associations.
Officials present
To encourage the fishermen, a host of officials including the RDO, Venkataramana Reddy, the MRO, Srinivasulu Reddy, the MDO, Savitramma, the District Public Relations Officer, J.U.K. Prasad, the village secretary of Mypadu, Ravikumar, a representative of Fisheries Department, Sivaramaiah and others were present. Beaming with confidence, the fishermen entered the sea hopeful of bringing back a bounty.
