MADURAI, MARCH 13. The Collector, D. Raajendiran, called upon the public, particularly factory owners, to adhere to the Constitutional provisions of protection and restoration of children's rights. Inaugurating a one-day workshop on eradication of the child labour system held under the joint aegis of the State Child Labour Rehabilitation Welfare Society and Madurai District Child Labour Rehabilitation Welfare Society at Vadipatti near here on Saturday, Mr. Raajendiran said that the Constitution provided special provisions for protection and restoration of child rights. Article 24, for instance, prohibited employment of children below 14 years in factories or mines or any other hazardous industry. It also enshrined provision of free and compulsory education to all children until they complete 14 years of age. Claiming that the child labour system was an universal issue, Mr. Raajendiran said that the efforts of the Government alone in rescuing and rehabilitating child labourers were not enough and that parents, the society, especially non-governmental organisations and factory owners should play their part by ensuring that children below 14 years of age were not employed. "The nation will prosper only when children of school-going age are put in schools and not in workplaces," he said. The Collector gave away financial assistance provided through the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravida Housing and Development Corporation to 40 families of rescued children and revolving fund to six self-help groups, amounting to Rs.2.5 lakhs, during the workshop. The Deputy Commissioner of Labour, A. Thangavelu, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), U.C. Natarajan, the Joint Commissioner of Labour, S. Mohan, the Labour Inspector, V. Ayyannar, the Project Officer (Mahalir Thittam), P. Renuka Devi, and the president, Madurai District Board of Temple Trustees, A. Chellapandi, spoke.
