Follow scientific farming techniques, farmers told

By Our Staff Reporter

THANJAVUR, MARCH 14. The Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, inaugurated two farmers clubs, for Soorakottai and Keela Ulur villages, of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) at Soorakottai, near here, on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, the collector appealed to the farmers to take to scientific farming with assistance from the farmers clubs.

Dr. Punniyamurthy, Professor and Head of Research Centre of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary University, said that a fisheries research centre would soon be established at Soorakottai.

He also said that the diseases that were afflicting the cattle could be cured through herbal medicine.

C. Ramadoss, Assistant Director, Department of Agriculture, said that women farmers and members of the farmers club could take part in contract farming of Gingeley and pulses introduced in the district through NAFED.

Farmers should take to cultivation of alternate crops during summer instead of paddy, he said.

V. Palaniappan, honorary secretary of Centre for Ecology and Research, a voluntary organisation, said that the NABARD had vested the responsibility of organising the Soorakottai and the Keela Ulur farmers clubs with the centre.

Already the centre has organised farmers clubs at Mathur, Pasupathikoil, Iluppakorai, Poonjeri and Karuppur.

Except Mathur, all the other clubs were exclusively meant for women.

The members of these clubs have won national and international awards for their best performance.

They also produce biofertilisers like tricoderma viridi, pseudomonas, and vermi compost and sell them.
