CHENNAI, MARCH 14. Monday's Corporation Council meeting began with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Councillor, A. K. Jagadeesan, urging the Deputy Mayor, R. Thiagarajan, to conduct the Council in a peaceful manner. But after four hours of discussion, the DMK walked out twice. Mr. Thiagarajan evicted the DMK members after making a reference to the DMK leader, M. Karunanidhi. The Council also passed a resolution on the recommendations of the Justice S. Natarajan Committee to ensure proper conduct of the Council. It was constituted after the clash between the Councillors in August 2002 over irregularities in the tender process. There were heated exchanges between the AIADMK Councillor, P. Vetrivel, and the Congress floor leader, R. Mano. When Mr. Vetrivel threatened to read a police first information report which allegedly had names of Mr. Mano's relatives, Opposition Councillors were on their feet condemning Mr. Thiagarajan for allowing Mr. Vetrivel to speak. Mr. Mano also threatened to read out an FIR filed against an AIADMK leader. Mr. Thiagarajan did not allow both Mr. Vetrivel and Mr. Mano to speak. Cutting across party lines, Councillors felt that the meetings have become occasions for some councillors to settle personal scores.
