SHG concept extended to minority communities

MADURAI, MARCH 14. The State Government has extended the self-help group concept to the poor among the minority communities in order to bring about an economic development among them too, the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Minorities Economic Development Corporation, A. Justin Selvaraj, has said.

Speaking to reporters at the Collectorate here recently, he said under the scheme, aimed at encouraging the poor among the minorities to form SHGs among themselves, each group would be provided a maximum of Rs.10, 000 as loan without collateral security through cooperative banks. The loan should be utilised to start employment generating trades and ventures such as idli shop, flower vending, appalam making, and ought to be repaid in 36 instalments at below five per cent interest per annum.

Nearly 56 persons hailing from Kanyakumari district were provided assistance on February 7 and another 136 would receive the assistance soon, Mr. Selvaraj said, adding the district was the first to form SHGs of minorities. Awareness meetings on promoting this scheme were conducted at Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Cuddalore, Sivaganga, Chennai, Virudhunagar and Madurai. Besides this, financial assistance amounting to Rs.7.37 crores was disbursed to as many as 1,764 members of minorities so far and another 204 Muslim youths were given loans of up to Rs.25, 000 each, for starting self-employment ventures.

Members of minority communities, who were also briefed on welfare schemes of TAMCO on the occasion, were urged to avail themselves of the benefits, the Collector, D. Raajendiran, said. The Managing Director of TAMCO, R. Elangorajan, and the Manager, R. Rizwan, were present.
