CHENNAI, MARCH 14. Even the dais looked like an FM radio. All the buzz was about 91.2 at MOP Vaishnav College for Women, Nungambakkam, on Saturday morning. "We are proud that ours is the first college in India to be provided with an operating licence for running a community radio station by the Government of India," announced the principal, K. Nirmala Prasad, to applause from a packed auditorium. The Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Arun Nigavekar, who launched the FM station, urged the students to use this potent tool to educate people. This powerful audio medium could promote better understanding of various subjects, "clarity in concepts" and "sound fundamentals" in particular, he said. He also lauded self-financing private colleges for keeping pace with change. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras, S.P. Thyagarajan, released a fortnightly newspaper `Yuvashakthi', brought out by the college. The challenge for students bringing out the paper would be to blend information and communication and convey the message in an educative fashion. He urged the students to use the newspaper to promote societal harmony and national integration. P. Haridas, secretary of the college, was present. The `MOP FM' at 91.2 MHz frequency will broadcast programmes between 6.30 a.m. and 7.30 a.m. with a repeat broadcast from 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
