dated March 16, 1955: New King of Nepal

Crown Prince Mahendra Vir Vikram was enthroned on March 14 in Kathmandu in the old Royal Palace, succeeding his father, the late King Tribhuvan. King Mahendra is the 20th in the line of King Prithwinarain Shah, who conquered Nepal, making Kathmandu its capital in the 16th century. Nearly a lakh of people witnessed the function, the Brahmins chanting the Vedas. The Indian and British Ambassadors as also members of other diplomatic missions were among those present. King Mahendra Vir Vikram Shah, in his first proclamation as King of Nepal, appealed to the people for unity and cooperation in the work of national reconstruction. The proclamation, broadcast over Nepal Radio, was read by General Kiran Shumsher, Commander-in-Chief. After formally announcing the death of King Tribhuvan, the proclamation said the body of the late King would be brought to Kathmandu for cremation with full honours. It paid tributes to King Tribhuvan for his efforts in ushering in democratic rule in Nepal and "freeing the people from the yoke of the Ranas." General Kiran Shumsher, after reading the proclamation, pledged the loyalty of the armed forces to the new King and appealed to the people to cooperate with the monarch in his efforts to make Nepal strong and prosperous.
