Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the NDA's accusation that Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has created an "unwarranted controversy" between the legislature and the judiciary (March 15). It is the Opposition that is creating an unnecessary controversy. Its very idea of tabling a no-confidence motion against Mr. Chatterjee smacks of political vendetta.
P.L. Ramana,
* * * Sir, While the Supreme Court was well within its jurisdiction in entertaining the petition on the question of the Jharkhand Governor's discretion in appointing Shibu Soren as Chief Minister, its direction to the pro tem Speaker to advance the date of the confidence vote was an encroachment on the legislative sphere. It is this aspect that has disturbed Mr. Chatterjee. That our legislators do not manage the affairs of the House well is no excuse for the judiciary to run the country.
