Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, MARCH 15. The Anti-Delimitation Action Committee of the Oulgaret constituency has protested against the move by the Delimitation Commission to delete Oulgaret Assembly constituency as part of measures to redraft the territorial limits of Assembly segments here. This resolution was passed at a meeting of the committee held here on Monday. It was addressed by different sections of the Oulgaret constituency. They said the Oulgaret segment should be retained in view of its historic and cultural significance. (The Delimitation Commission has come out with plans to redraft the constituencies raising the number of segments in Pondicherry region from 21 to 23, reducing the number of constituencies in Karaikal from six to five, bringing down the segments from two to one in Mahe and retaining Yanam the sole segment. In the process Oulgaret would lose its identity). A spokesman of the action committee said in a release today that as a mark of protest, a fast would be organised at Oulgaret on March 17. The committee's office-bearers would present a memorandum to the Delimitation Commission members who would camp here for a public hearing on March 20. A demonstration would also be held on that day. The committee also protested the move of the Union Health Ministry to convert JIPMER into an autonomous body.
