MS varsity to train SHG members in legal matters

By our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, MARCH 15. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University would conduct a comprehensive three-day training and awareness programme for women entrepreneurs of self-help groups from Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin districts on personality development and legal aspects related to consumer rights protection and labour welfare, the Vice-Chancellor, Cynthia Pandian, has said.

Speaking at a function organised here today by the Tirunelveli Branch of Indian Institute of Public Administration in connection with `World Consumers' Day' celebrations, Dr. Cynthia said every consumer enjoyed the right to select commodities, to know all the details about the product and to protect his welfare during the purchase of any item for consumption.

Based on these broader aspects, several laws to protect the rights of the consumers had been enacted.

The entrepreneurs of women self-help groups, who had revolutionised the rural economy of the State, should acquaint themselves with the legal aspects protecting the rights and welfare of the consumers.

The proposed training programme by MSU for these entrepreneurs would certainly give a clear idea about the legal aspects relating to the consumer rights protection and labour welfare, she said.

Distributing prizes to the winners of the quiz competition on Consumer Protection Act 1986, the Tirunelveli Collector said the self-help groups in the district, who had started manufacturing units, should try to conform to highest quality standards so that they could entice new customers towards their products, besides protecting the welfare of consumers.
