TIRUNELVELI, MARCH 15. After observing a daylong dharna on March 3, the members of the Confederation of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited Executives, including a woman, began their three-day relay fast in front of the Office of the General Manager, BSNL, Vannarpet, here today. The protestors said the BSNL administration, which earlier agreed for time-bound promotions, was not prepared to honour its commitment and instead was making clandestine efforts to spoil the accord. Hence the BSNL should give promotions to the officers within the stipulated period and due weightage for past service at the time of promotion. Condemning the Union Government's decision to increase the cap of the foreign direct investment to 74 per cent, the confederation said the move would undermine the safety of the country. Accusing the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) of annihilating the BSNL, the protestors said the private players in the telecom industry were squandering the money of the rural population of the country even after the TRAI reduced the Access Deficit Charges in their favour. The government's move to privatise the BSNL should be given up forthwith, they demanded. The protestors said the BSNL administration should take resolute efforts to procure the prepaid SIM cards in adequate numbers to have an upper hand over private players. The BSNL should also reduce the monthly rentals of landline phone connections. The president of All-India BSNL Executives Association, Jayapaul, inaugurated the fast in the presence of the president of Sanchar Nigam Executives Association (India), K. Sundaraparipooranan.
