`Rs.30 lakhs spent on tsunami relief'

NAGERCOIL, MARCH 15. The Saint Boniface Anbagam, a charitable organisation working for the uplift of orphans and the destitute in the State, has spent more than Rs.30 lakhs towards tsunami relief, said its founder-patron, Fr.Albert Diedrich .

Speaking to The Hindu , he said their organisation took some constructive steps to help the tsunami-hit in the district, by providing food, clothes and shelters, besides deputing a medical team to provide first-aid to the affected fisherfolk. As a part of long-term strategy, it was also decided to spend more than Rs.9 lakhs for carrying out the rehabilitation package.

Meeting

A State-level meeting on tsunami relief, rehabilitation co-ordination would be held at Nagercoil on Friday, said the convenor of a forum, Y. Siluvai Vasthian.

In a release, he said various subjects related to tsunami would be discussed for the benefit of the affected fisherfolk. He appealed to the affected people to air their grievance in the meeting so that it would be taken to the notice of the Government in order to get immediate redress.
