Rugova survives bid on life

PRISTINA (SERBIA-MONTENEGRO), MARCH 15. Kosovo President, Ibrahim Rugova, survived an apparent assassination attempt today after a bomb exploded as his convoy passed through central Pristina.

At least one person was injured by flying glass, police spokeswoman Sabrije Kamberi said.

Mr. Rugova, who was apparently unhurt, had been heading to a nearby government building for a meeting with the European Union's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, when the explosion occurred.

Mr. Rugova's car was damaged, and he was seen being transferred to another car and being driven away after the explosion. "Thank God I survived again,'' Mr. Rugova said, appearing calm before his meeting with Mr. Solana. ``Unfortunately there are still elements which want to destabilise Kosvo.''

Last year, a hand grenade was hurled at Mr. Rugov's residence from a passing vehicle.

The grenade exploded in the garden without causing any injuries, and no one was ever arrested in connection with the attack. — AP
