HYDERABAD, MARCH 15. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, S.K. Das, has denied a report published in these columns on March 10 that World Bank officials have expressed disappointment over the bank-funded project. In a clarification on Monday, he quoted the bank team as saying that the project had made "substantial progress in both proper direction and correct orientation." Mr. Das said the progress report furnished to the bank team was up to January 2005 but not as on date. By February the total expenditure on the project was Rs.206.87 crores and not Rs.183 crores as mentioned. As against the project target of improving 315,800 hectares of forest, by the end of January, 2,25,090 hectares (71.28 per cent) had been treated. He said that as the Government had approved the revised R&R policy and resettlement plan by May 2005. Regarding the construction of the department head office, Mr. Das said it was not being taken up at the expense of other project activities.
