TIRUPATI, MARCH 15. The World Consumer Rights Day was observed by various public organisations in Tirupati on Tuesday. At a meet organised by the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi, K. Rami Reddy, a retired IAS officer, opined that universities had to become active to meet the challenges posed by private varsities and advised the student community to demand quality education as a right. Reeling out statistics, he said 68 per cent of the educated bought medicines without taking note of the expiry date, while demanding receipt for an item purchased is not at all considered. Adulteration of foodstuff, oils and medicines was going on unhindered and junk foods, cola drinks and coloured ice creams were being sold without health cautions, he rued. P.Sujatha Devi, District Consumer Forum member, appealed to the public to utilise the forum's services by bringing to its notices incidents of fraud. At a separate meeting by the Chittoor District Consumer Council, its president, P. Raja Reddy, spoke on consumer rights and law and expressed concern that lakhs of rupees were being spent on purchase of faulty goods. B. Devaki, a professor of Home Science at SVU, and C. Swarajyalakshmi, commerce lecturer at SPW College, spoke.
