Choice-based credit system to be introduced

SHIMOGA, MARCH 15. Kuvempu University has decided to introduce Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) at the post-graduate level from the next academic year.

A proposal to this effect was accepted at the meeting of the Academic Council here on Tuesday.

The meeting gave its approval to the Academic Regulations governing the CBCS. The university is the first in the State to introduce the system. Under the system, students can pursue post-graduate studies in two courses simultaneously.

Eligibility

S.A. Bari, in-charge Registrar (Evaluation), said students who have completed the three-year degree course are eligible for admission for courses to be conducted under the CBCS, and the duration of the programme normally extended over two academic years, each of them comprising two semesters and each semester comprising 16 weeks of class work.

Approval for schools

The meeting gave its approval for the establishment of School of Physical Sciences, School of Chemical Sciences, School of Biosciences, School of Social Sciences, School of Languages and Literature, School of Law, School of Education, School of Business Studies and School of Engineering and Technology to encourage research activities.

PG courses

It also approved the new post-graduate courses to be started from the next academic year. The new courses are: M.Sc. in Microbiology, M.Sc. in Biochemistry, Master of Business Administration, Master of Tourism and Heritage Studies, Master of Tourism Administration, Master of Food and Nutrition Technology, Centre for Advanced Research and Biosciences, Master of English Language Teaching, Centre for South Asian Studies, Adult and Continuing Education and Field Outreach, Master of Financial Analysis and Accounting and Post Graduate Diploma in International Finance and Post Graduate Diploma in Astrology.

The Registrar, Praveenchandra Pandey, said that while 40 per cent of seats for these courses will reserved for merit, 60 per cent will be allotted through payment system.

Recognition

The meeting accepted the request by the UGC to treat the degrees/diplomas and certificates awarded by Open Universities in conformity with its notification on specification of degrees as equivalent to the corresponding awards of the traditional universities. The other subjects that received approval include regulations governing the B.E. degree Course (of the Revised New Scheme).
