MADURAI, MARCH 15. The initiative for setting up a government dental college here has begun with the Government Rajaji Hospital sending a feasibility report to the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) giving particulars about land availability and additional land to be acquired. The report has said that the land available at the proposed site at Balarangapuram is not sufficient as per the Dental Council of India norms and that the Madurai Corporation must acquire additional land. The GRH Dean, Kalavathy Ponniraivan, told The Hindu today that the State Government asked for a feasibility report on the dental college after the issue was raised in the Assembly. A dental college in Madurai was a long-pending proposal "and it is certainly needed to cater for the people of southern districts." She said there was only one Government dental college in Chennai. While the total land requirement as per norms was five acres, there was a shortage of two acres, she said. A section of GRH doctors said "alternative arrangements should be made by identifying land even on the outskirts or nearby places such as Thoppur where the GRH already has planned to acquire land." They pointed out the proposal had been pending for about eight years.
