CUDDALORE, MARCH 15. The police have arrested six persons, including a college student, for a double murder in the Cuddalore Old Town area eight months ago. A leading oil merchant, Sankaran Chettiar (60), and his octogenarian father, Shanmugam Chettiar, were brutally murdered in their house on July 28. The youths, led by a college student, T. Sanjivi (20) of Malumiarpettai in Cuddalore O.T., attempted to loot the Chettiar's house. They hit the two men with weapons used for removing nails, S. Panneer Selvam, Superintendent of Police, told presspersons here today. Sanjivi, a second year B.Sc. student in a college here, and a former member of the "Friends of Police" planned the burglary with S. Kanagaraj (20) of Pachayankuppam, S. Lazar (21) of Koothapakkam, M. Raja (25) of Koothapakkam, M. Pugazh (23) of Cuddalore O.T., and P. Guna, alias Gunasekaran (27), of Tuticorin.
A colour television set, a gold chain and silver anklets were recovered from the youths, who were remanded to judicial custody. Mr. Selvam gave a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 to Delta Force personnel, led by sub-inspectors Dhandapani and Sundaramurthy, who rounded up the youths.
