EDS to expand Chennai, Pune facilities

By K. T. Jagannathan

CHENNAI, MARCH 15. Electronics Data Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd., a fully owned subsidiary of EDS Corporation of the U.S., is expanding its presence in Chennai and Pune, according to Abhay Gupte, its Managing Director.

The over $20 billion EDS is a delivery company providing business and technology solutions.

The company had "short-listed some facilities" in these two cities, he said. "It will take us four months to set up a new facility on a leased premises," he added. The move for expansion, he said, was to support new businesses that its parent had singed up in areas like telecom, financial services and manufacturing. "We will be serving clients in Europe, Asia-Pacific and the U.S.," he said. Further, the EDS-led `ATLAS consortium' had been chosen as the preferred bidder for the U.K. Ministry of Defence Infrastructure Project. The project was worth around $4 billion over a ten-year span and considered the largest contract win for EDS since 2002.

In an interaction with The Hindu, Mr. Gupte said the Indian subsidiary would be doubling its headcount in 2005. At present, EDS has around 2,200 employees. All its facilities in India except in Mumbai were focussed on high-end application services. It has seven facilities in four cities (Chennai, Pune, Mumbai and Gurgoan). In Mumbai, it has a BPO (business process outsourcing) operation. Globally, EDS employs close to 1.20 lakh people. Over 37,000 people are in the application service area. Out of around 2,200 employees in India, close to 1,500 are in the application service area. Mr. Gupte said the doubling of headcount in 2005 could happen mainly in this area.

At present, the EDS facilities in India could accommodate 3,000 plus people. "We will add people in stages," he said. EDS offered its clients `best shore' offer as distinct from `offshore' one. EDS had identified 18 locations as `best shore' ones and India was among them, he added.
