BJP undermining constitutional offices: Congress

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MARCH 15. The Congress today came out strongly against the Bharatiya Janata Party for using "strong language" against the Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee. The BJP's suggestion that presiding officers of legislatures stay away from the Sunday meeting does not show the BJP/National Democratic Alliance in good light, it said.

The Congresssaid that the BJP was pursuing the "policy of confrontation to undermine constitutional offices" and has now chosen to target the Speaker, which had never been done in the past.

"The Speaker is the head of the legislature and it is the duty of the ruling party and the Opposition to extend cooperation to ensure smooth conduct of the House. The BJP has now perfected its habit of a systematic attack on constitutional offices," the party spokesperson, Anand Sharma, said.

The Congress statement came in the wake of the NDA virtually asking the Speakers of the States ruled by the Alliance not to attend the meeting on March 20 and adopted a resolution commenting on the role of the Speaker in creating an "unwarranted controversy."

The Congress said that the BJP/NDA had chosen to disrupt the proceedings of the House when the matter could have been discussed in the House. "The developments do not show the BJP in good light," he said.

CPI(M) to wait

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has decided to wait for the time being instead of raising the pitch against the BJP vis-à-vis its attack against the Speaker.

The party MPs were of the view that instead of pushing the issue forward now and be seen in the context of developments in Jharkhand, the strategy should be to allow some time.

The party MPs said that efforts should be made to ensure that no political attribute is attached to the CPI(M) for raisingthe issue since the Speaker belongs to the party.
