Uttaranchal
By Our Staff Correspondent
DEHRA DUN, MARCH 15. Activists of the Uttarakhand Kisan Sabha today staged a demonstration near the Uttaranchal Chief Minister's residence seeking a better deal for the poor, farmers and labourers. Addressing the activists, the Sabha president, Bachiram Kanswal wanted the Government to execute works under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and disaster management through district level all party committees as the present system of leaving these works to the bureaucracy had led to mass scale corruption. The Government should also transfer the 32 departments to the panchayats as required under the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments and create a village development fund for all villages in place of the MLA's Local Area Development Fund, Mr Kanswal said. Gangadhar Nautiyal wanted the Government to immediately establish good roads, schools, medical aid centers and drinking water facilities in all villages where the conditions had not improved even after the creation of the hill State. The Sabha also sought a minimum fixed price of Rs 125 per quintal for sugar cane and decrease in the prices of petrol, diesel and electricity. All those affected by the Tehri Hydro Development project should be suitably rehabilitated along with those affected by massive landslides in the higher districts.
