BANGALORE, MARCH 15. The Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, assured the Legislative Council today that the Government will order a departmental inquiry into alleged malpractice involving the son of the Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University in the Bachelor of Computer Applications (final year) examinations conducted by the university. Mr. Manjunath was responding to Balakrishna Bhat (BJP) who raised the issue. Mr. Bhat said, "On April 20 and 28 (2004), the student Murali wrote the paper on information technology in an exclusive place on the university campus. It is surprising that the Government has not sought an explanation from the authorities concerned." Mr. Manjunath said that the Government had written to the university authorities four months ago and is awaiting a response. The Leader of the Opposition, D.H. Shankaramurthy, M.P. Nadagouda (JD-U) and others felt that expecting a response from the authorities of the university is not a pragmatic approach. Constituting a House committee is the only way to find out the truth, they suggested. Mr. Manjunath ruled out constituting a House committee and said a departmental inquiry by a senior official of the rank of Principal Secretary will suffice.
