BANGALORE, MARCH 15. The Government will introduce a comprehensive legislation in the next legislature session to regulate the mining of sand, the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, told the Legislative Assembly today. Replying to B.R. Patil of the Janata Dal (S), Mr. Dharam Singh said there is no question of banning sand mining from riverbeds as the material is essential for construction work. However, he assured the House that the Government will take steps to check illegal mining and transportation of sand. Mr. Patil alleged that sand is being removed from riverbeds illegally up to a depth of 20 feet, thereby causing groundwater depletion. G.V. Sriramareddy of the CPI(M) urged the State Government to ban sand mining in Kolar district, where the groundwater level has declined sharply. Jayaprakash Hedge (independent) also said many roads have been damaged in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts because of the movement of overloaded lorries on them. The Government should release funds to repair the roads.
