Prince Philippe arriving today

Bangalore March 15. Prince Philippe of Belgium accompanied by Princess Mathilde will be fulfilling public engagements in Bangalore on Wednesday. The Prince will be meet the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh. The State Government will sign an agreement with the regional Government of Flanders in Belgium. The prince will attend a luncheon organised by Brussels Export and two other Belgian trade and industry organisations and the Bangalore Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He will visit Xsysys at Electronics City and inaugurate its new unit. He will also visit Capco and its new premises before leaving for Mumbai.

Princess Mathilde will be visiting Hampi on Wednesday. Several Ministers and dignitaries from Belgium will be accompanying her. The VVIP team will arrive at Kamalapur, adjacent to Hampi, in three helicopters around 10. a.m. From there they will be taken to the important monuments by road. Special vehicles have already arrived from Bangalore for the purpose. The team is expected to leave for Bangalore around 2.00 p.m. according to official sources.

Dharam Singh for Hubli

HUBLI March 15. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, is arriving here on Wednesday on a day's visit to Dharwad, Haveri and Gadag. Mr. Dharam Singh, will arrives in Hubli at 11 a.m. and leave for Hirekerur in Haveri district to participate in the silver jubilee of Hirekerur Taluk Vidyavardhak Souhard Sahakari Sangha and a new college named after the late K.H. Patil. He will reach Hulkoti in Gadag district to inaugurate the K.H. Patil Institute for Human Excellence and return to Bangalore via Hubli.

Passport information

Bangalore March 15. The Regional Passport Office has announced that passport status enquiry/ information is now available on phone no. 1250244 in Bangalore. Members of the public outside Bangalore have to add the prefix 9580 to that number. Mobile telephone users have to contact the no. 12506. The facility has been provided in association with VoiceGate and BSNL, according to a Press Information Bureau press release.

KPSC notifies marks

BANGALORE March 15. The Karnataka Public Service Commission has notified the marks secured by candidates in the competitive examination conducted in December 2004 for recruitment to various posts in the Department of Urban Development. (Environmental Engineer 123 posts, Assistant Engineer 33, Junior Engineer (Civil) 135, Junior Engineer (Electrical) 45 and Accountant 92.) The notification is available on the notice-board of the commission's head/regional offices and also on the commission's website http://kpsc.kar.nic.in.

Four textile parks to be set up

DAVANGERE MARCH 15. The Union Government has reportedly agreed to set up a textile park in Davangere at a cost of Rs. 60 crores, according to Shyamanur Shivashankarappa, Davangere MLA. In an informal chat with presspersons here today Mr. Shivashankarappa said the Union Government has decided to set up textile parks in four places: Davangere, Gadag, Betagere and Doddballapur. The Union Government has asked the State Government to provide 70 acres at Karur Cross near Davangere, he said, adding that the land will be provided to set up the park. The MLA said that the proposed textile park will have handloom, powerloom and readymade garment units under one roof. The park is expected to open up employment opportunities, apart from paving the way for the establishment of huge a number of subsidiary units.

Moily seeks inquiry

BANGALORE MARCH 15. The former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily has urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to order an immediate inquiry into the reported atrocities committed against poor people by the Bajrang Dal, the Yuvasene and other Sangh Parivar organisations in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. In a letter to the Chief Minister, Mr. Moily cited a report in a Kannada daily on Tuesday headlined "This is not in Iraq but Udupi." The report, with a picture, gives a detailed account of the violence perpetrated on a man and his son who were allegedly transporting cows to slaughterhouses. This kind of violence by the Sangh Parivar and its outfits has been a common affair for the past two years in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, Mr. Moily said. The Government should initiate action against the offenders, including police officials who failed to prevent the incident, he said.

`Raise exemption limit'

Bangalore March 15. The Karnataka Pradesh Hotels and Restaurants Association has urged the Government to give exemption under VAT up to a turnover of Rs. 40 lakhs and fix the sales tax at 4 per cent if the turnover exceeds that amount. According to K.L. Ramanatha Bhat, under the VAT system, hotels and restaurants come under Schedule V. As they do not come under the dealer category, the exemption limit should be raised from Rs. 2 lakhs to Rs. 40 lakhs for the benefit of the development of the mid-level and small hotels in the State. "The exemption limit for luxury tax has to be raised to Rs. 600 per day per room in lodging houses to boost domestic tourism in the State. Initially the exemption limit was Rs. 400 and the same has been reduced to Rs. 150 per room per day," Mr. Bhat said.

`Libraries matter for accreditation'

Bangalore March 15. College libraries have a pivotal role in the accreditation process since they contribute to enhancing the learning process, V.S. Prasad, Director, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), said here on Tuesday. Addressing a national workshop on "Identifying quality indicators in library and information services for accreditation," Prof. Prasad said that with the concept of accreditation gaining momentum, institutions have realised that quality enhancement is significant for themselves and the country. "The workshop will provide useful insights for improving managements standards in library sciences and specify the minimum qualitative standards required,'' he said. The workshop was an effort by NAAC to develop a set of objective quality indicators to help assess libraries of academic institutions. Issues of quality assurance and sustenance, research, advocacy and information, dissemination, library advisory committees, infrastructure, curricular aspects, student support and progression were deliberated in the sessions, and recommendations made on the way forward.

Mysore March 15. The Mysore Telecom District, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., has said that meter reading services hitherto working on level "1090" has been changed to "1669" owing to technical reasons with immediate effect.

Adalat

Mysore March 15. A Postal Adalat will be held on March 28 at the office of the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Mysore Division, Mysore 20. It will commence at 10.30 a.m. and people may send their grievances or complaints with all particulars to the office by March 21, the release added.

Consumers told to be cautious

CHAMARAJANAGAR MARCH 15. The Deputy Commissioner, Harsh Gupta, has called upon consumers to be cautious while purchasing things. He was speaking after inaugurating World Consumers' Day celebrations organised by the Food and Civil Supplies Department here today. Mr. Gupta said a consumer forum has been opened in every district to look into the problems of consumers. Though the district administration has information about food adulteration, it cannot take action has no one has approached the consumer forum, he added.

The Headquarters Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner, Ramu, and the Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies, Ka. Rameshwarappa, were present.

Training programme

CHAMARAJANAGAR MARCH 15. RUDSET, Mysore, will hold a 15-day free training programme in April in agarbathi rolling for unemployed youth.

A press release from RUDSET said select trainees will be provided free boarding and lodging during the training programme. Unemployed youth aged between 18 and 25 and living in Mysore, Mandya and Chamarajanagar are eligible to apply for the programme. The aspirants should have knowledge of Kannada.

Interested persons may write to the Director, RUDSET, Main Road, Hinkal, Mysore-570017 along with a self-addressed envelope bearing stamps worth Rs. 5 by March 31.
