Central grant released

HYDERABAD: The Centre has released a grant of Rs. 22.65 crores and 14,889 metric tonnes of common rice for six districts in the State as the second instalment under the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojna (SGRY) for 2004-05. According to an official release, the six districts are East Godavari, Cuddapah, Krishna, Mahbubnagar, Medak and Srikakulam.

Indo-UK joint exercise

HYDERABAD: An Indo-UK joint exercise in humanitarian support, the first such joint training programme, has begun in Secunderabad. The mission is aimed at improving the joint capabilities and effectiveness in dealing with contemporary situations requiring international peace keeping effort. This is an exercise in planning and implementing humanitarian assistance under the United Nations mandate.

The imaginary scenario for the exercise depicts providing assistance to a civil war torn country jointly by the two countries The exercise is only for the planner and does not involve any troops. However, the overall responsibility to schedule this exercise is being jointly shared by the Integrated defence staff (India) and the Chief of Joint Operations (UK). Senior military and civilian officers will monitor the progress of the exercise which will conclude on March 19.

Police questioning Gopanna

Kakinada: Seshagiri Rao alias Gopanna, the naxalite, who was lodged in Central jail, was handed over to the police for a three-day custody following court orders on Tuesday. At twelve noon, he was shifted to the police guesthouse in Rajahmundry under tight security. The Sub-divisional Police Officer of Rampachodavaram, Velivela Satyanarayana, and the Circle- Inspector of Maredumilli, Y.V. Ramana, began interrogation. The Superintendent of Police, Naveen Chand, said that the interrogation was mainly centred on the cases booked against Gopanna in the Maredumilli police circle, which includes the land mine blasts and arson.

Taken ill after consuming toddy

CUDDAPAH: Five villagers of Cherloboyapalle village in Badvel mandal were taken ill due to consumption of spurious toddy. Of them, Siddhaiah, was taken to Tirupati in a critical condition. The other villagers were Guravaiah, Pullaiah, Basavaiah and Penchalaiah. The Cuddapah Excise Superintendent, L.C. Muralidhar, visited the village on Tuesday and enquired about it.

BRAOU results out

HYDERABAD: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) on Tuesday declared the results of the first year under-graduate programme (B.A, B.Com and B.Sc) for which examinations were held in December 2004. Memorandum of marks will be despatched to the residential addresses of students. The paper-wise results will be available at study centres. The results are also made available on the university website -- www.braou.ac.in. The first spell (annual) examinations of the first year under-graduate programmes are scheduled from May 22. The last date of submission of applications is March 20, according to a press release.

Tyagis' plea on pension

HYDERABAD: Freedom fighters have demanded parity in payment of pension to them by the Central and State Governments. The Andhra Pradesh Freedom Fighters' Organisation made a representation to this effect to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Tuesday. Its president and former Minister, M.S. Rajalingam, was present.

The memorandum highlighted that the State Government was paying Rs. 1,000 a month to freedom fighters as against Rs. 4,320, including Dearness Allowance of Rs. 1,320, paid by the Centre. The anomaly was promised to be rectified by the Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, in the Assembly six months ago, but no action was taken.

Four more in CBI custody

ANANTAPUR: The judicial custody of one of the suspects in Paritala murder case, Peddi Reddy, was extended for another 14 days by the Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate here on Tuesday. On a petition moved by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) the judge, A. Jayaraj, passed the order.

Meanwhile, the CBI sleuths were learnt to have taken four persons into custody on Monday night.

2 hurt in mishap at NTPC unit

KARIMNAGAR: In a freak mishap, two persons were injured when the steam water pipeline burst at the seventh unit power plant at the NTPC, Ramagundam on Tuesday.

Reports reaching here said that the BHEL General Manager, P.R Balakrishna, and the L&T employee, Bahadur, were conducting the routine pipeline checking when the pipeline exploded causing serious injuries to them. They were given treatment at the NTPC hospital and later shifted to Hyderabad. The NTPC authorities ordered an inquiry into the mishap.

Cuddapah: BSNL and Sanchar Nigam executives launched a three-day relay hunger strike in front of the BSNL office here on Tuesday seeking settlement of their demands. The leaders of the two associations -- P. Obanna, Balagopalaiah and Venkata Rao -- said their demands included time-bound promotions and lifting of ban on recruitment.

Cuddapah: Anti-rabies vaccine will be administered at a subsidised rate of Rs. 190 per injection at the Indian Red Cross Society blood bank at Matti Peddapuli here from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. everyday, said its honorary secretary, M. Krishnamurthy Rao. Those suffering dog bites should take five injections on day of being bitten, third, fifth, 14th and 30th day, he said.

Applications for

free power

NELLORE: Transco authorities of Nellore district have advised farmers opting for switch over from aqua to paddy cultivation to contact the nearest Assistant Divisional Engineer's office for registration of applications for the purpose of getting free power. Such applications should be submitted before March 31. A survey is to be conducted to know about the impact of fresh eligibility of free power.

CPI dharna

ANANTAPUR: The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Tuesday staged a dharna in front of the main branch of the State Bank of India here demanding recovery of outstanding dues from industrialists and businessmen in the country. The party leaders submitted a memorandum to the District Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, later.
