Hyderabad, March 15. Are figures furnished by officials to be believed blindly? The Endowments Minister, M. Satyanarayana Rao, is not the one to go by whatever statistics provided by officials. He caused a flutter in the Assembly today by repeatedly asserting that he had no belief in the figures given by officials of his own department. Answering a question tabled by Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu (TDP), he said an extent of about 17,000 acres of temple lands were illegally occupied "as per the information furnished by department officials" as against 3.76 lakh acres of temple lands. As Mr. Patrudu insisted on a better reply, he hastened to add that the extent must be much larger and that he himself was not satisfied with the statistics given by his department officials. "The officials themselves are responsible for many encroachments," the Minister said amidst sniggers. The Minister announced that he would soon appoint a committee to identify the encroached temple lands and present the facts before the House.
