HYDERABAD, MARCH 15. The Government would take steps from the coming academic year to cancel the affiliation of junior colleges which advertise the ranks obtained by their students, the Higher Education Minister, P. Venkateswara Rao, informed the Assembly on Tuesday. Replying to a question by S. Udaya Bhanu (Congress) he said the reforms in corporate education, based on the recommendations of Neeraja Reddy Committee, were taken up to reduce stress and strain on students. Listing some steps being initiated, he said the fee structure would also be decided by the Government. The shift of colleges and change of management would not be permitted. Detailing the measures already taken, he said all junior colleges were made to follow the academic calendar strictly to avoid the corporate colleges run the institutions throughout the year.
Strict directives
The institutions were instructed not to hold class work on public holidays and vacations, issue admission cards, prevent ragging of students, conduct counselling sessions, convene monthly meetings with parents, make compulsory co-curricular activities and games and sports.
Insurance scheme
The Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, told Ch. Jaggi Reddy (Congress), that the Government was considering a proposal to provide a health insurance scheme to farmers, weavers, weaker sections and the unemployed youth.
Misappropriation
The Forest Minister, S. Vijayarama Raju, told Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri (MIM) and others that gate money on sale of tickets to the tune of Rs. 32,36,603 had been misappropriated at the Nehru Zoological Park between December 2002 and June 2004. He said that three zoo staff -- Khaja Nazamuddin Ahmed (Sr Asst/accountant), Mohan Pillai (Office Superintendent) and M.H. Mujahid (accounts officer) -- were placed under suspension. He said departmental action was being taken against them and efforts were being to recover the misappropriated amount. The case was also being referred to the CB-CID.
Social welfare hostels
The Social Welfare Minister, Redya Naik told S.Salajanath (Cong), 44 new social welfare girls hostels were being sanctioned for 2005-06 and proposals for opening 50 ashram schools were under consideration.
