It's against protocol, says TDP

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MARCH 15. The Telugu Desam Legislature Party has questioned the Government's decision to invite the All-India Congress Committee president, Sonia Gandhi, to lay the foundation-stone for new international airport at Shamshabad and said it is against protocol and well-established norms.

Addressing a press conference, the TDLP deputy leaders -- Y. Ramakrishnudu, T. Devender Goud and N. Janardhan Reddy -- wondered in what capacity Ms. Gandhi was performing an important official task, normally reserved for the President and the Prime Minister. None of the three posts she held, including the National Advisory Council, entitled her the right to lay the foundation stone.

The Cabinet rank for the third post, did not bestow any official status, they asserted.

They alleged gross misuse of official machinery for mobilising people for the "Vijayotsavamu" (victory rally) here tomorrow.

They alleged that district Collectors were asked to book vehicles to carry people to Hyderabad in the name of the "Velugu" training programme. They wondered on what basis and achievements it was organising the rally.

They wondered if the victory celebrations were for "successfully" deceiving farmers and diluting the free power supply to them.

The rally was being held at inopportune time, when the State was reeling under drought and severe drinking water shortage.
