GUWAHATI, MARCH 15. The Assam unit of the P.A. Sangma-backed Nationalist Trinamool Congress(NTC) formally merged with the State unit of the Nationalist Congress Party(NCP) here today. Altogether 2860 NTC members from different parts of the State like Sivasagar, Mariani, Nagaon formally joined the NCP to give effect to the merger, said the chief spokesperson of the State unit of the NCP, Dilip Hazarika. At a formal merger function held at the NCP office, president of the State unit of the NTC, Nirmal Goswami handed over the party flag to state unit NCP president and former Chief Minister Sarat Chandra Sinha. The two leaders then jointly raised the NCP flag to symbolically complete the merger process. Apart from Mr. Sinha and Mr. Goswami the lone NTC MLA in the Assam Assembly, Alok Ghose, also addressed the merger function. Working president of the NTC and former MP Prabin Sharma was also present at the merger function. The merger decision was taken at a meeting of the State unit of the NTC held on January 24. A senior NCP leader said that though P.A. Sangma has not been able to return to the NCP's fold on "technical reasons attributed to anti-defection laws," the merger of various State units of the party in North-East with the respective State units of the NCP had his blessings.
