Sport Day at DPS Indirapuram

NEW DELHI MARCH 15. Nearly 1,200 students in the age group of three years to eight years showcased their talents through drill displays, dance performances and athletic competitions during the Second Junior Sport Day of DPS Indirapuram near here.

Renowned Kathak exponent Shovana Narayan was the chief guest at the function held on March 12. Along with the school Principal, Meeta Rai, and a large number of parents and invitees, she witnessed the various presentations made by the children.

During the function, the students lit a symbolic Olympic torch, released colourful balloons, performed yoga asanaas, presented a taekwondo display, danced to bhangra beats and performed aerobic routines.

French team visits institute

NEW DELHI MARCH 15. Academicians and administrators from France representing seven French institutes and universities visited the Ansal Institute of Technology in Gurgaon this past week to establish academic collaboration in various disciplines including engineering and management. The delegation is on a visit to the country to explore the possibility for tie-up with various reputed institutes here including IIT Roorkee.

The visitors were shown the infrastructure and other facilities developed to conduct the international twinning programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in engineering, computer science, business management and information systems.

Birla Award for Prof. Jayannavar

NEW DELHI MARCH 15. Prof. Arun Mallojirao Jayannavar of the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, has been chosen for the 14th G. D. Birla Award for Scientific Research. Prof. Jayannavar, who is trained mainly in India but whose research has received international recognition, is a reputed condensed matter physicist.

He was selected for the award, given to Indian scientists below 50 years, by a jury comprising of eminent scientists from the country's best scientific institutions. The award carries Rs 150,000 and a citation.

Previous winners include CSIR Director-General R.A. Mashelkar and Prof. Ashoke Sen, Fellow of the Royal Society, London.

Prof. Jayannavar's research in statistical mechanics, quantum transport and mesoscopic physics has earned him a rare distinction. According to the jury, his research has important bearing on the designing of high-resolution nano particle separation devices.

Management programme for NHPC engineers

NEW DELHI MARCH 15. The Amity Institute of Training and Development (AITD) is conducting a two-week basic management programme for engineers at the National Hydro-Electric Power Corporation (NHPC). Twenty-five professionals from NHPC would be undertaking the management programme.

The two-week programme that began on Monday was inaugurated by the Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC, Yogendra Prasad, in Faridabad. In his inaugural speech, Mr. Prasad stressed the importance of management programmes for his engineers. "For success at any workplace, it is essential that workers understand the importance of human touch. Hence, we thought of this collaboration with Amity for the basic management programme," he added.

Seminar on World War II

NEW DELHI MARCH 15. A seminar-cum-presentation on the "Role of Allies in World War II" was organised jointly by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) and the Indian Association of Friendship with Foreign Countries to mark the "60th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" here in the Capital this past week. The Head of Information and Culture, RCSC. Sergey V. Cherkas, spoke about the heroic exploits and the counter-offensives of the Soviet Army, resulting in the collapse of the Nazi empire. The presentation included Indian participation in World War II and the political evolution in the country against this background.
