`Corruption cause for food adulteration'

By Our Staff Correspondent

UDUPI, MARCH 15. The President of Zilla Panchayat, U. Vanajakshi, on Tuesday said food inspectors were not doing their jobs with sincerity in checking adulteration. She was presiding over the inauguration of the World Consumer Day celebrations organised by the Udupi Consumers' Forum, District Consumer Information Centre and the Dr. T.M.A. Pai Human Resources Development Centre, here.

Ms. Vanajakshi said food adulteration continued as often some food inspectors and other government officials indulged in corruption. It was essential for the government officials to do their work with honesty and dedication.

A recent incident of a batch of chilly powder sent to a foreign country by India, which was found to contain a carcinogenic colouring substance, Sudan-I, best illustrated this, she said.

It was not enough if people kept singing glories of the country and its culture. Without hard work and honesty, nothing could be achieved. Mere pride in one's history not matched by ideals in deeds would lead the people nowhere. Teachers had an important role to play in making students aware of consumer rights, Ms. Vanajakshi said. Inaugurating the function, the Deputy Commissioner, T. Sham Bhatt, said many letters had been received at his office on the issue of adulteration.

Legislation

Delivering the keynote address on "Crusade against adulteration, counterfeiting and spurious products,'' the District Health Officer, B.M. Hegde, said though the country had laws on adulteration, it was their implementation, which left a lot to be desired.

Damodar Aithal welcomed the gathering. Lakshmi Bai proposed a vote of thanks. K.R. Hande, Director of T.M.A. Pai Human Resources Development Centre, was present.
