Temperature

MADURAI, MARCH 15. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 34.6 degree Celsius and a minimum of 23.9 degree Celsius.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam today stood at 109 feet with an inflow and discharge of 120 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 25.56 feet with an inflow of 63 cusecs and a discharge of 30 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit was 861 mcft.

While Marudhanadi recorded a rainfall of 7 mm, the Periyar dam received 3 mm.

Woman killed

A 54-year-old woman was killed in a road accident on the Madurai-Melur National Highway at Chithampatti near here today.

According to police sources, M. Umarani of Melur, an employee of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment department here, was travelling in a private bus from Melur to Mattuthavani integrated bus stand when the driver applied sudden brakes to avert an accident.

The woman was thrown out of the bus.

She suffered a grievous head injury and died on the spot.

The Othakadai police have registered a case.

Murdered

A heavily armed gang is alleged to have murdered a history-sheeter at Silaiman on Monday night.

The police said M. Mahalingam (25) of LKP Nagar, an accused in several cases, was sleeping in front of an evening mutton stall late last night when a six-member gang attacked him with lethal weapons.

The victim sustained multiple injuries and died on the spot. Previous enmity is suspected to be the motive behind the murder. The Silaiman police have registered a case.
