A jarring melody

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MARCH 15 . It was a song that almost caused embarrassment to the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in the Council during the debate on the Corporation's budget today.

When the entire Opposition dubbed the budget a disappointment, an AIADMK member, M. S. Mani, rose to contradict it. Countering the charge of poor allocation for education and that the condition of the Corporation schools was bad, the councillor chose to sing a popular number from the M. G. Ramachandran film, "Malai Kallan."

Picking a stanza from the middle, he sang "theruvenkum pallikal kattuvom/kalvi theriyatha makkal illathu seivom" (we will build schools on all streets to ensure there were no illiterates).

The Opposition members sprang to their feet and demanded that the councillor sing the opening lines too - "Yethanai kaalamthan yematruvar indhe naattile" (for how long will these people cheat in this country). They said these lines would help describe their anguish over the budget that was a "fraud on the people."

But, with everyone keen on ending the discussions soon, the wrangle over the song ended abruptly and saved the AIADMK from embarrassment.
