Women's development centre proposed

KOCHI, MARCH 15. A Rs. 17.5-lakh centre for women's development is one of the top priorities in the budget proposals of the Edappally Block Panchayat for the next financial year, approved by the Panchayat Committee here.

The budget has proposed an expenditure of Rs. 1.76 crores and projected an income of Rs. 1.77 lakhs. The State Plan component is Rs. 61.9 lakhs, including the Rs. 38.93 lakhs under general head and Rs. 22.97 lakhs for special component.

The Rs. 17-lakh women's development centre is aimed at creating infrastructure for storing products by self-help groups in Thrikkakara, Cheranalloor and Kadamakkudy panchayat limits under the Edappally Block. Women in these panchayats will also be given special training under this project.

A sum of Rs. 27 lakh has been set aside for building houses for the economically weaker sections of society. Grama panchayats will be given Rs. 1.94 lakhs each for the Clean Kerala Project.

The Block Panchayat will also contribute Rs. 3.1 lakhs towards the welfare of the physically challenged for a programme being organised jointly by the District Social Welfare Department and the Rotary Club of Cochin.

The budget has set aside Rs. 14.37 lakhs for developing infrastructure in rural areas. A sum of Rs. 6.62 lakhs will be utilised for providing nutritious diet to children at Anganwadis. This sum will be handed over to the various panchayats.
