KOCHI, MARCH 15. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) today arrested a man from Gujarat on the charge of cheating at Ernakulam South Railway Station. The RPF said he posed as member of the Railway Board and tried to avail himself of facilities free of cost. The man has been identified as K.J. Desai of Ganesh Nagar Society, Mersana, Gujarat, and former Accounts Officer under the Gujarat Government. The accused arrived at the railway station today morning and wanted to inspect catering units at the station, including pantry cars and canteens. In support of his authority to do the inspection, he produced a letter, saying he was member of Railway Board (Catering), to Rajan Ninan, Station Manager, and demanded that free accommodation be arranged for him. Mr. Ninan contacted the RPF. A copy of the letter was faxed to Chennai and then to the office of the Railway Board in New Delhi, where, the RPF said, it was confirmed that the letter was forged. Later, the RPF arrested Desai, who had by that time, completed `inspection' of three kiosks on the food court at the station. T.S. Gopakumar, Circle Inspector, RPF, said that on interrogation, the accused confessed that he had been carrying on with this fraud for three years.
