VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 15. As summer advances, the city's water needs increase. One cannot afford to waste water. With Godavari pipeline works still going on, there is uncertainty whether the Municipal Corporation can meet the requirements of the city for the difficult days ahead. That being the scenario, one was surprised to find a pipeline "burst'' at Siripuram junction. The "burst'' had flooded the road. Officials say that bursts do not occur often. ``In the 800 to 900-km main water pipeline in the city, everyday, 15 to 20 leaks or maintenance problems occur. The breakdown is generally taken care of in two to three hours and water supply restored,'' says P. Panduranga Rao, VMC's Chief Engineer.
Factors
The "bursts'' could be caused by digging of the road above for trenches for laying cables, loose joints, "water hammer'' that builds up owing to disruption in power supply or pumping motors. The "burst'' at Siripuram was reportedly caused by a loose joint. However, Dr. Panduranga Rao maintains that due to a valve repair, water was let off at Siripuram. Surprisingly, the VMC does not have any data about the wastage caused by such bursts and leaks. ``It is precisely to assess such losses that we want to fix meters at various stages - from pumping scheme to the city, from there to the reservoir and finally at individual houses,'' he says and asserts that it is not for charging the household for the water supplied that meters are proposed.
