136 filariasis cases in district

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 15. Filariasis has been reported from 46 locations in the district. This includes cases reported from Karimadam colony, Karamana and Vattiyoorkavu in the city.

According to official figures, 136 people (69 men and 67 women) had been afflicted with the disease in the district, the District Medical Officer, E.K. Madhavan, said. Of these, 79 cases have been found in those above 40 years, 53 cases in those in the 15-39 age group, and 4 cases in the 0-14 years group.

Health Department officials estimate that the actual numbers would be more as many cases go unreported. The department's mass drug administration programme for eradicating filariasis and for preventing spread of the disease will be held on March 28.

A meeting of people's representatives in the district, representatives of Government and autonomous institutions and representatives of non-Government organisations has been called by the District Collector on March 18 to discuss implementation of the programme with public cooperation.
