BMP invites tenders under parking scheme

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, MARCH 15. While the Mayor, R. Narayanaswamy, has announced that the pay and park scheme will be scrapped on April 1, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) officials invited tenders to run parking lots in SKR Market, at Rajajinagar Commercial Complex and at the BMP's North-east zonal office on Queen's Road.

This was made known by the members of the Bangalore City Parking Lot Contractors' Association here on Tuesday.

The association president, M. Ramakrishna, told presspersons that the BMP opened bids for parking contracts in S.K.R. Market and at Rajajinagar Commercial Complex on March 11. He said a contractor has come forward to run the SKR parking lot for Rs. 38 lakhs a year.

Contractors' demand

The association secretary, V. Padmanabha, criticised the BMP for announcing the scrapping of the pay and park scheme and inviting tenders to run parking lots.

Association members demanded that the BMP retain the existing contracts till their terms end in December. He said because of the announcement, the parking attendants are finding it difficult to collect parking fee.

"We had borrowed money on interest to pay the earnest money deposit (EMD) and tender amount to the BMP. We are now concerned whether we will get it back," he said.

Over 100 contractors, who were allotted parking lots under the scheme on 142 roads, paid over Rs. 6 crores to the BMP as tender amount. Besides, over Rs. 1 lakh was paid as EMD (this includes last year's amount), he added.

BMP admits mistake

Hours after the parking lot contractors spoke about the new tenders, the BMP admitted that the tenders were called "by mistake."

The tenders have been cancelled, officials said.
