Man found dead in police post

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 15. A 30-year-old man was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the toilet of Shanti Nagar police post at Tri Nagar in North-West Delhi this morning. While he is suspected to have died from electrocution, the police claimed he had committed suicide.

The deceased, Parmeshwar Dayal (30), a resident of Karawal Nagar, ran an imitation jewellery shop at Ganeshpura in Tri Nagar. On March 4, the police received a complaint from his 60-year-old mother, Dulari Devi, alleging that he had been abducted. She told the police that she received a call from him claiming that some people had abducted him.

Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case and launched investigations. According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West Delhi), Sanjay Singh, Parmeshwar was traced to Bhorgaon near Pune and brought here onboard the Jhelam Express around 10-30 p.m. on Monday. "Throughout the operation, Parmeshwar's cousin, Shekhar, was with the police team. After reaching Shanti Nagar police post, the police informed his family members that he had been brought back, but no one came to take him," said a press release issued by the police.

It is not clear where Shekhar was when Parmeshwar was brought to the police post.

Parmeshwar was "allowed to sleep" at the police post for the night. It is suspected that sometime during the night, Parmeshwar went to the toilet and was electrocuted when he came in contact with a live wire.

It was only in the morning that a policeman noticed Parmeshwar lying in the toilet in an "unconscious state". Parmeshwar was rushed to Sunder Lal Jain Hospital around 9-45 a.m., where he was declared brought dead.

The police said his hand had burn injuries suggesting that he was electrocuted. "A bulb holder in the toilet was found broken which indicates that Parmeshwar deliberately broke it and committed suicide by electrocution," said a police officer.

Meanwhile, the area Assistant District Magistrate (ADM) has initiated an enquiry into the incident. Also, the police post in-charge, Sub-Inspector Randhir Singh, and constable Ravi Dutt, have been transferred to the district lines for "negligence while on duty". The police are however tight-lipped about how they managed to trace Parmeshwar's whereabouts to Bhorgaon.
