Partly cloudy day ahead
The maximum temperature at Safdarjung on Tuesday was 32.6 degrees Celsius while the minimum was 18 degrees Celsius. At Palam, the maximum was 32.5 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 18 degrees Celsius. The maximum humidity at Safdarjung and Palam was 92 per cent and 88 per cent respectively, while the minimum at the two places was 29 per cent and 33 per cent respectively.
Alleged suicide
According to the police, they received a call around 5 a.m. claiming that Anju Gupta, wife of the railway engineer, Anand Dev Gupta, had jumped from the fourth floor of the Railway Officers' Colony flat to death. The police reached the place and found the body lying on the balcony of first-floor flat. Anju is survived by her husband and two daughters, one of whom is presently appearing in her Class XIIth examinations. While the police have not recovered any suicide note, they have initiated inquest proceedings in the matter.
Racket smashed
According to reports, Northern Railway officials had been receiving complaints of an unauthorised agency running from Pandev Nagar area in East Delhi for the past few months. Its sleuths then started keeping watch on the activities of unauthorised travel agency -- Himalayan Tour and Travels -- and then it approached the agency and got two tickets booked in fake names for different trains. At the time of delivery of tickets, the squad raided House No. A5 Pandav Nagar and recovered 16 reserved tickets and 59 cancelled tickets from there. Besides, other relevant records including cashbooks, ledger books, bill books and one note book containing details of reserved tickets and commission earned from it were also recovered. The owner of this agency, Chhavi, was arrested. Senior Northern Railway officials said they have stepped up the vigil across the Capital and would continue to conduct raids to curb the menace of unauthorised agencies.
Man beaten
to death
The police said four brothers, Mehboob, Shamshad, Irshad and Mehmood, were fighting among themselves near a nursing home in Trilokpuri around 7-45 p.m. last evening when Abdul Rahim and Nazeer, both of whom lived nearby, objected to their behaviour. The brothers then turned their ire on the two. In a fit of rage, Mehboob picked up an iron pipe and hit Nazeer on his head. He was declared brought dead at GTB Hospital. Following the incident, the area residents staged a protest demanding immediate police action against the accused. The police today arrested Shamshad and Irshad. Mehboob and Mehmood are absconding.
