Bucknor felicitated

KOLKATA, MARCH 16 . Steve Bucknor was felicitated by the BCCI for becoming the world's first umpire to stand in hundred Tests on Wednesday.

Cricket Association of Bengal President and former BCCI Chief Jagmohan Dalmiya handed over a plaque to Bucknor shortly before the start of the opening day's play of the second cricket Test match at the Eden Gardens.

Dalmiya was accompanied by BCCI Joint Secretary Goutam Dasgupta during the brief function. Around 30,000 spectators broke into spontaneous applause as Bucknor raised the silver plaque in acknowledgment.

Bucknor, who made his debut in April 1989 at Kingston, Jamaica in the Test between India and West Indies, has done duty in four consecutive World Cup finals.

An accomplished football referee, six-foot Bucknor has also supervised a World Cup football qualifier. Bucknor said that he wanted to continue till the 2007 World Cup in West Indies to realise his dream of equalling Dicky Bird's record of umpiring in five World Cup finals. — PTI
